Fresh to market: sleek Marina duplex designed by Richard Neutra

Newly listed in San Francisco is a rare thing for the city: a home designed by Richard Neutra, one of this country’s most revered contempoary architects, known in particular for his iconic mid-century modern designs in southern California (hat-tip: Curbed SF).

This duplex at 2058 Jefferson St in the Marina, originally built in 1938 for two doctors, has been completely overhauled over the past ten years by its current owner, architect Chad Overway, and is now for sale for $3,950,000.

An article in Sunset Magazine covering Overway’s restoration reported on how it was “executed with remarkable care and precision”. Wall-to-wall carpeting and dated-looking tiles were ripped out, and a stainless steel fireplace, modeled on a design from Neutra’s Nesbitt House, was installed in the living room.

With its minimalist kitchen and Neutra-replica chrome-frame chairs, the look is clean and contemporary. The building has a four-car garage and two units: 2058 and 2056 Jefferson. The former is 2,530 sq ft on two levels and has three bedroomss, three bathrooms, and a “dramatic” roof terrace. The latter is smaller, at 1,724 sq ft, and comes with two bedrooms and two bathrooms.
