Starting your Startup (Joe Stump at FOWA Vegas 2011)

Joe Stump, CEO and founder of SimpleGeo, put together this slide deck on starting your startup. 99% of the presentation is key for anyone starting a business. The other 1% is for people starting a technology startup.

Choosing your technology stack is one of many decisions you’ll have to make when creating a company from scratch. Along with this, you’ll need to figure out who you should found a company with, who you should take money from, what the company culture should be, management processes, and who to hire when. Joe will be covering basic technology stack choices as well as other critical decisions one faces when starting a startup.

Key Takeaways

  • Starting a company is really hard. Dont start a company unless its an obsession and something you really love.
  • Choose your partner wisely.
  • Focus on the problem.
  • Focus on a single use case that addresses the problem.
  • Listen to your customers.
  • Question your initial assumptions.
  • Implementation takes time.

I LOVE Craigslist. Of everything Ive ever posted on Craigslist, Ive only been unable to sell one item. Damn you fondue set!!! (go easy on me, Im selling it after all)

A short list of things Ive been able to sell on Craigslist includes:

- a guitar

- a couch

- a bed

- a car (I sold my car on Craigslist within a day for almost the same price as what I bought it for two years earlier from a dealer)

- a house. Yup! I learned how to sell my house for sale by owner and a big part of that was advertising on Craigslist. The first offer I received was within a week of my first posting on Craigslist.

Ive also bought a lot of things from Craigslist and have learned a few things about selling from being an experienced party on both sides. And these tips will help you sell things FAST.
